Hydroelectric Power Plant
This was a rather large and in-depth project for a small, one-unit hydro plant. The primary purpose of the project was to modernize and standardize the Unit and Transformer protection with new SEL relays, integrating the new protection elements with SEL RTACs and a protection system HMI. Since the plant lacked high-speed protection on the Station Service transformer we installed SEL relays with their Arc-Sense technology, routing fiber optic loop sensors through the feeder breaker cabinets and around the 480v bus to quickly detect and clear arc-flash events in the 480v switchgear helping protect personnel and equipment. This was a fun project and the customer’s technicians and electricians were hard working, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. Demolition in progress: removing old devices and wiring, and cutting out cabinet faces to accept new panels. For ease of design and installation, a retrofit panel “skin” is being installed.
Before the upgrade: the control cabinets in need of a protection system upgrade. Before beginning any relay upgrade project, we do a thorough wiring verification to develop good “as-found” drawings.
The panels: our panels come powder coated, pre-loaded with the specified equipment, pre-wired, and ready to install.
The install: the Unit and Transformer panel skin is made with 11-gauge galvanized steel sheet and is given good rigidity by the 19-inch rack framework welded to the panel.
Upgraded: The Ronan LED light boxes for the annunciator system are much cleaner and brighter than the old light boxes. The HMI integrates information from the protection system to view and help troubleshoot any protection system events in the plant.
Additions: as part of the protection upgrade we chose to install SEL-2600 RTD modules on the Unit; we specified a cabinet and design and the panel shop pre-wired it for ease of installation.
Station Service: new switchgear doors for the SS protection upgrade. Panel skins weren’t appropriate so we opted to build new doors. The dimensions of the equipment was a challenge with a swinging door and a tight cabinet so here we’re checking fitment and clearances.
Arc-Flash: our techs work with the plant electricians to install fiber optic loop and point sensors enabling the SEL-751 Feeder Protection Relays to quickly detect an arc-flash event and clear it.
